Sean pulled into the parking garage at Orpheus after a silent return from the club. He stood and looked at the ghost of his sister. "Colin...I can't...can't carry her without projecting. Can you...?"
Colin nodded quickly, and picked up the hue. She thrashed a bit, as though the touch was painful, but he stroked her hair softly and she seemed to settle down.
Sean made a small noise but motioned fitfully for Colin to lead the way. The procession of ghosts, hues, a quick and a projector made their way to the elevators as silence once more took reign.
In an echo of their return from Savannah, however, Kate Dennison stepped off the elevator as they approached. "Would someone like to tell me what the Hell you people thought you were doing?" The banshee was fuming.
"Nay now, Kate", Colin said quietly. He looked down meaningfully at his trembling burden, and Kate's gaze softened a bit.
"You can deal with that shortly, Agent MacGregor." The words were said with a finality that the ghost recognized. Kate would not be put off. "Sean, I'm sorry. I promise we'll do everything we can for her, but for now, we need to figure out what to do about this mess."
Sean nodded stoically, and the group stepped into the elevator.
"CJ has already returned, along with Max", Kate informed them, her tone all business once again. "They're waiting in Conference room seven."
Colin winced. The ILP room.
The group entered the undecorated conference room and Colin gently set his burden down in one of the uncomfortable black chairs. Sean knelt protectively next to the chair his hand reaching out, but unable to touch her etheric gauze from his own flesh form.
CJ and Max were already seated at opposite ends of the table, scowling at each other.
"Now, I will ask again", Kate began. "What happened."
"A team wen' in tha' was nay ready for another mission and e'erything wen' tae Hell", Colin snarled.
Dennison sent a withering glance his way. "That will do, MacGregor. Agent Vance? You were technically the lead on this. Would you care to enlighten me?"
Liz met the Director's gaze evenly. "We accomplished much of our stated goals. The sample of pigment was obtained and the fact that users can perceive spooks was confirmed. Although Jonestown never showed, so we were unable to..."
"And what part of your stated goals did getting the police involve accomplish? Never mind the media!" Kate was fuming now. "You", she pointed at Liz, "and you", then at CJ, "were identified. Very shortly, you will be traced back to Orpheus, and then we will be on the front page of the newspaper linked to pigment dealing!"
The last two words were shouted as the banshee slammed her hands down on the table. Colin winced, but the table held.
"I can call Joe", CJ offered. "Maybe he can run interference, keep our names out of it."
Colin looked thoughtful. "Wha' if we can ge' some positive spin on i'?"
"I'm listening", Kate said, calming slightly and turning to face the young ghost.
"Was a join' operation between the Atlanta police and Orpheus, trying tae bust a pigment ring", Colin said slowly, the idea percolating through his mind. "CJ is the perfect liason for tha'."
CJ nodded slowly. "We might be able to swing that. Probably have to turn over one of our two pigment samples to bribe Captain Bale into agreeing with it."
"And we'll need tae ge' i' working fas', before anyone else puts i' taegether", Colin added.
"Which means I should go down there now", CJ said as she stood up from the table.
Kate chewed her lip. "I had planned on confining you all to the Orpheus compound until this was all straightened out." She rolled her eyes. "The only thing that would make this worse is if you wound up being caught out by the media and interviewed."
"Tis our bes' sho' a' coming ou' o' this on this sor' o' notice", Colin said hopefully.
Kate thought a moment longer, then nodded. "Very well, but have them send someone to pick you up."
CJ nodded her assent and hurried from the room, pulling her cell phone out as she went.
"As for the rest of you, I meant it. You are not to leave the campus. You're officially on beach time until further notice." Kate looked around the room. "Do I make myself clear."
"Crystal", Max scowled. "Does that mean we're dismissed?"
"For now", Kate said flatly.
Max quickly left and Scooter hurried out as well. Liz nodded to them all in turn before taking her leave.
Kate sighed. "It's for your own good. And I meant what I said, Agent Kilmer. If there's anything Orpheus can do for you, or for your sister..."
Sean looked up, tears forming in his eyes, and nodded. "Thank you Kate, but I think...I think this is something...", Sean choked a bit and Colin started forward, grief and guilt wrenching through him.
"Something I need to finish."
